Frontenis 2!
If you're reached this page you've more likely than not
read the previous page describing this sport and my first impressions of
it. I was impressed! Here, we have a sport that is played in
frontons all over Spain, Southern France, Mexico and South America- and
now more and more in South Florida!
I don't know how much the CPQ Handball Paddleball Association is
involved in supporting this sport but Juan Guerra definitely is! And it
shows by the Frontenis tournaments he's graciously hosted and sponsored
at his house in Miami.
Just recently, I, among others you may recognize in the pics below, were
invited to a Frontenis event at his place and my impression of of the
sport remains the same- awesome! These guys pound that ball at
each other at over 100 mph easy for 20 to 30 hit volleys, many to killer
backhands. It seemed to me that the ball was kept close to the left wall
to avoid the angle shot set-up to the corner.
Rob Sostre looked on with an interested and analytical eye but didn't
play (this time!)- but one familiar face to us Historic Courts
regulars, Kenny Arwood, did play, and did quite well for a
first-timer! Talk about jumping in with both feet- His first day playing
the game and he enters a tournament? This guy does it all!
Juan generously hosted this tournament and I guess it was also a
good reason to throw a party- there was excellent food and assorted
beverage and I'm certain everyone there will tell you it was a great
time. Thanks, Juan! I hope to be invited to watch (and maybe play a
game!) soon!
